The measure phase is to measure the current situation in a precise and quantified way. It consists of a set of tools allowing a pragmatic measure of our subject of study.

1. The Process Map

The process map allows you to map a process by identifying the inputs (input) and outputs (output) of each step. by correlating with the CTQ, it defines the KPOV and relates Input with the CTQ.

2. The cause-effect matrix

The cause-effect matrix evaluates the level of input influence on CTQ. It allows you to filter input to select the 5 to 10 most influential inputs.

3. The VMEA

The issue of VMEA is to finalize input selection to defineKey Process input Variable(KPIV). Starting from the inputsselected with the Causes/effects matrix, the VMEA fits into the detail of each variable.

4. Put the obvious parameters under control

In order to avoid “noise“, we will put under control the situation by eliminating the obvious causes of variability of the inputs. This will pass through standardization, the refurbishment of the equipment or the Training.

5. First measure

On the few KPIV selected by the VMEA, we will use the mathematical tools to:

  1. Set up the data collection plan
  2. Check the reliability of your measuring system
  3. Describe the data you have collected
  4. Set up a control chart
  5. Measure its capability

The right questions to ask at the end of this phase

  • Is the data reliable?
  • Have we identified any quick-wins?
  • Are my obvious settings under control and reliable?
  • Am I well in tune with the initial indicators of the project?
  • Have I now reduced my number of cases to the minimum possible?
  • In view of the more in-depth understanding of the problem, do we need to change the project charter?
