With a simple and visual layout, it allows to visualize the inputs and outputs of the process that we want to study.


The SIPOC is a process approach for translating customer expectations (CTQ) in process specifications (Input and Output). It gives an overall view of the process to improve and clarifies the study perimeter.

The term SIPOC means:

  • Supplier: all internal and external suppliers of the process.
  • input: all inputs of the process.
  • Process: A block representing the process and describing it in a substantial way by 4 to 8 steps maximum.
  • output: All process outputs for both internal and external clients.
  • Customer: all internal and external clients of the process

The construction stages

  1. Identify the process as a whole: 1 block for the entire process.
  2. Cut out the process in a few major milestones.
  3. List the client groups and prioritize them.
  4. For each group, list the CTQ.
  5. Set the Output: what customers receive.
  6. Set the inputs and indicate whether they are controllable, standard , and noise.
  7. Prioritize Input and Output.
  8. Check the mapping: discuss in a group the obtained schema and validate with the Sponsor That the perimeter of the project is the right.

In the end, we get a diagram, allowing us to have an overall view of our subject of study.

Controllable, Standard and Noise

Each Input can be considered controllable (C), Standard (S), Noise (B):

  • Noise: You may not necessarily have any influence on him. For example, the productivity of masons is related to the weather (rain, snow, heat…). Off, this parameter is not controllable or only within limits (start a site in the spring rather than in winter…).
  • Controllable: It can easily be varied. Nevertheless, to date, it is not yet easily known to all and is not part of the operational standards.
  • Standard: It is a controllable Input or Output that is part of the working standards. It is easy to control and must already have complete documentation.

For each Input, the following questions must be asked:

How is it monitored?

What is the frequency of verification?

What coherence does it have?

Does it have an optimal value known?

What is its variation around the target value?
What is she?

Is it really impossible to control it?

What is the robustness of the system?
Is there?

Is he known?

Is it understood?

Is it followed?

Is it audit?

Is there an operator certification
